Problem Statement

There are 1785 small islands with a total population of approximately 20 million people, which leads to an average population of 11,040 people per island. Almost all of these islands run on diesel generator (genset) based minigrids to generate electricity. The International Renewable Energy Agency predicts that by 2030, at least 30% of the people living on islands will be without, or not have easy access to electricity. With electricity generation, these island population challenges are:

  • volatile fossil fuel costs, which are most likely to increase in the long-run.
  • estimated that they are burning 7.8 billion litres of diesel per year with more than 20 million tons of CO2 emission.
  • costly transportation of diesel to the islands.
  • Diesel generators can lead to blackouts and storms can damage them.
  • Lack of electricity for more than 80% of day.
  • Expensive maintenance by skilled technicians.
  • Frequent power outages.
  • Low voltage system, which causes overheating in the wiring

Solution Statement

Our hybrid renewable energy system patented solution consisting of solar photovoltaic and wind turbine and battery energy storage is a solution to overcome electricity challenges for many island locations in the world. These locations are primarily dependent on a single renewable electrical generation because conditions in their area are windy some days and sunny other days, so it is challenging to provide a continuous stream of electricity compared to larger islands. Technological know-how on floating solar and wind turbines that requires underwater engineering are vital for a hybrid solution. Our focus has been on small islands and villages. We have a modular backup system built to fit the needs of coastal floating houses and island communities, ensuring safety, reliability, and consistency of electricity for the people.
