About UM DeepTech (UMDT)

The UM Deep Tech (UMDT) Accelerator Programme is a structured 6-month scheme organized by the UM Centre of Innovation and Enterprise (UMCIE). Its primary objective is to bridge the funding gap from lab proof-of-concept (PoC) research to market by supporting deep tech startups in moving from the early research stage to a market-ready phase with "validated assumptions market-ready prototypes." UMDT offers mentorship, training for 24-weekend classes, and hands-on market validation study from coaching experts. The programme is divided into 3 stages as follows:
Stage 1: Customer-Problem Fit
Stage 2: Solution-Prototyping Fit
Stage 3: Problem-Solution Fit

  OBJECTIVES PROGRAMME          

The main goal of the UM Deep Tech Startup Accelerator programme is to help deep tech startups transition from their early research stage to a market-ready phase by providing financial support in the form of grants. This support aims to bridge the funding gap and enable startups to create working prototypes with proven potential in the market. The programme seeks to foster a strong entrepreneurial community within the Universiti Malaya and empower innovative entrepreneurs to bring their groundbreaking solutions to fruition, making a positive impact in the real world.

  CRITERIA AND ELIBILITY              

  • The startup must form a team before joining the programme. The team must consist of 1 UM researcher/ academician as founder and co-founder can be the student, seasonal entrepreneurs, businessman etc.
  • Applicants (Project Leaders) are UM Researcher (permanent and contract staff), PhD or Post-Doc
  • Applicants are allowed to apply on their own or together with their Co-researchers.
  • Submitted Project MUST have Lab Proof of Concept (PoC) OR Lab Prototype, OR intellectual property (IP), and priority will be given to projects with a minimum Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 4.
