Problem Statement

Disease outbreaks in aquaculture, particularly in Tilapia farming, bring huge losses to the industry. There are many problems that aquaculture farmers face. One of them is a bacterial infection, a significant problem that brings disaster to aquaculture animals. Aquaculture farmers use antibiotics to treat the disease. However, the problem is that bacteria have developed resistance against antibiotics. Up to now, the disease from bacteria is still a threat to the industry.

Solution Statement

Bacteriophages are natural enemies of the pathogenic bacteria in aquaculture farming. They will be able to attack the pathogenic bacteria that cause the disease particularly in Tilapia. Bacteriophages either instantly killing the bacteria or integrating its DNA into host bacterial and kill the bacteria when they are under stress. Bacteriophages have been isolated so they can be used in phage therapy against important aquaculture pathogens. Bacteriophage cocktails technology has been proven to be an effective diagnostic and therapy product for the antibiotics-resistant pathogenic bacteria in aquatic animals.

UM has patented and isolated specific Bacteriophages as a phage therapy against important aquaculture bacteria. This cocktail of Bacteriophage technology is an effective diagnostic and treatment product for the antibiotics-resistant pathogenic bacteria in aquatic animals.
